12. yüzyıldan itibaren zengin kaynakları takip ederek Karanlık Denizi batı yönüne doğru aşmaya çalışan Müslüman gemiciler, Avrupalılardan yüzyıllar öncesinde enlem ve boylam derecelerini isabetle ortaya koyabilmiş, eksiksiz haritalar çizebilmişlerdir.

Bu kitapta Fuat Sezgin'in çığır açıcı araştırmalarının izini süren Susanne Billig; Arap-İslâm gökbilimi, haritacılığı ve denizciliğini çok sayıda çizimle anlatırken, vaktiyle teknik bakımdan geri kalan Avrupalıların bu kıymetli bilgileri nasıl kendilerine mal ettiğini gözler önüne seriyor.
