Türk dilleri ailesinin Karluk veya doğu kolu olan Çağatayca, Karahanlı (11.-13. yüzyıllar) ve Harezm (14. yüzyıl) yazı dillerinin devamı olarak Timurlular (1405-1506) idaresi altında gelişip ortaya çıkmıştır. Çağatayca, 15. yüzyıl başından 20. yüzyılın başına kadar kullanılmış ve zamanla bütün Orta Asya Türklerinin yazı dili hâline gelmiştir.
